Why this guide

The context travel sites leave out.

I came to Indonesia expecting Bali to be the main event. It wasn't. Some of my favorite places were ones I knew almost nothing about before I arrived.

I also made the mistakes: moving through East Java too fast, underestimating Bali traffic, six nights on the wrong Gili. This guide is how I would plan Indonesia now, with the part most guides skip: what it was actually like to move through it as a Black traveler.
