Passports
Before Licenses.

Ten ways I’d raise Black kids who see the world. The deals, the life skills, the diaspora, and the kind of summer they’ll talk about for years. I turned the ideas from my videos into a practical, free PDF.

What’s inside

Ideas are cute. Here’s the how.

01 / Timing

Go when everyone else stays home.

Compare holiday travel days and the weeks after the rush. The guide includes a seasonal cheat sheet and a fare-deal permission slip to help your family decide quickly.

02 / Confidence

16 by 16 is a north star.

Passports before licenses means building a capable traveler, stamp or no stamp. There’s an age-by-age ladder from choosing an activity to planning a budget.

03 / Values

Tokyo over toys.

Start a World Fund, study the Black diaspora, keep real friendships abroad, and price a few weeks in one place against a resort week.

Ten ways to begin

A family travel playbook.

  1. Test anti-holidays and off-season windows.
  2. Write a flight deal permission slip.
  3. Get passports and track meaningful places.
  4. Give a new travel responsibility each birthday.
  5. Open eligible children’s airline accounts.
  6. Let each trip make a small creative project.
  7. Build a World Fund for experiences.
  8. Explore the Black diaspora together.
  9. Nurture a global auntie and uncle network.
  10. Try temporarily living somewhere for a summer.

For Black parents and parents-to-be first, and for any family ready to make travel more intentional. Your first step can be a weekend nearby.

A note from Zach

“Remember the summer we lived in Lisbon?”

I’ve visited 36 countries and traveled full-time for two years. I’m sharing what those years taught me about seeing more of the world with purpose. I’d want my future kids to learn that Blackness has many homes and that travel is a skill they can grow into.

Questions / answers

Before you download.

Is this only for parents?

No. It’s for parents, future parents and anyone planning meaningful travel with children.

How do we travel with kids on a budget?

Compare nearby dates and off-season windows, set an all-in trip budget, and agree on booking rules before a fare appears. The guide has worksheets for both.

Can children have frequent flyer accounts?

Many airlines allow individual accounts for children, with different guardian, earning and pooling rules. The guide gives a six-airline comparison and official places to check current terms.

Do kids need passports for international travel?

U.S. children need passport books for international air travel. Under-16 applications have special in-person and parental-consent requirements; verify the current rules before booking.

What does 16 stamps by 16 mean?

It’s an aspiration, not a scorecard. Many destinations no longer stamp passports, so a travel journal counts just as much.

Can I pull my child out of school to travel?

School attendance and make-up-work rules vary by state and district. Check yours and plan the learning before booking.
